Web Crawler invades Yangster Blog

Upon checking the Blog View History, Yangster discovered that his blogs are referred from search engines such as Baidu.com and About.com
Apparently, searching for "Gaussian Surface" might link to this blog site.
Wow, the web crawlers are invading personal blog pages.
Yangster doesn't want the world to know about his math jokes.

In Need of Reliable Transportation

There must be a conspiracy to keep Yangster at home this past week.
Ride bike, bike broke. Drive car, car broke. Take TTC, TTC broke.
Let's examine what had happened:

1) Bike:
Yangster was riding his bicycle to the CNE. As he rode past the streetcar tracks along Bathurst King, the rear deraileur snapped. Darn, must push the bike the rest of the way. Sent the bike for repair. Cost: Out for 2 weeks(unable to claim warranty, must order parts), $35

2) Car:
After refueling at a gas station, the engine electrical system warning sign lit up on the control panel. Drove the car to the dealership for repair. Turns out there's a problem with a switching valve.
Cost: Serviced for 2hrs, $250. (The cost of buying a new bicycle!!!)

3) TTC:
Yangster was returning home on the subway when it was announced that a problem arised at Coxwell station. No subway between Broadview and Victoria Park. The shuttle buses and bus platform were jammed pack with commuters.(Wish the bicycle was still operational)
Cost: 45mins delay

Yangster doesn't know what the Gods of Probabilities are up to, but is determined not to be trapped at home.
Ride bike, bike broke. Drive car, car broke. Take TTC, TTC broke.
Walk, shoes are still holding up well.

Fifa U-20 Opening Ceremony in Toronto

July 1st is Canada Day.
It was also the opening match for Canada(playing against Chile) in Fifa's Under-20 Word Cup.
Yangster celebrated Canada Day with the Massed Band of the 32CBG at the BMO field in Toronto.
The Band was to perform in the opening ceremony before the match.

Link to photos and video of the opening ceremony: http://web.mac.com/peteraylin/iWeb/Site/

The opening ceremony featured the band, acrobats, dancers and politicians.(The politicians put up a boring show as usual....haha)
As we waited to enter the field for the start of the ceremony, we could hear chants from the Chilean fans. Wow, there are quite a lot of Chilean fans at the soccer match!(More than Canadian Fans?)

"By the center, QUICK MARCH!"
The first thing I noticed as I marched onto the field was that the grass(artificial) turf felt so soft against my boots.  But it offered less traction than concrete/asphalt. (Might be a problem if we were doing slow marches)
The crowded cheered as we did our first counter-march. It certainly felt good to be cheered!(contrary, the politicians were booed when their names were announced, haha)

After the band got into the circle formation, the acrobats performed their act in the center of the circle.
Yangster's multi-tasking skill was tested to the limits as (x->inf?) he tried to look at the music, look at the conductor, and watch the acrobats at the same time.

When the acrobats finished, the dancers came, put up some good moves, formed a giant soccer ball(only the surface of the zebra sphere).
Then the band marched off(into the sunset).

A 15min show that was rehearsed for almost 2 days!
Reminds me of the proverb: 养兵千日,用兵一时

Fishing is fun.

If you ever played Civilizations 4(Started in the ancient age), you would hear this familiar proverb once you researched the Fishing technology.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

So fishing is an important skill for survival in the ancient age.

In the modern age, fishing is no longer a survival skill, (The ability to obtain high marks on exams seems to be the new survival skill)
fishing has become a recreation.

Yangster was invited to a party near Chemong Lake, north of Peterborough and got his hands wet in fishing.
It didn't take a while to learn how to cast a line out and reel it in.
The bait looks/acts like a real fish(if I were a big fish, that is). It's a small green fish with a plastic device that makes the bait appear to swim like a fish.

Fishing is a game of patience, just like chess.
Wouldn't it be fun to fish and play chess at the same time?
That question ran through my mind as I patiently waited for a fish to bite at the dock.

Dinner called and I was about to reel in and head back when suddenly...

I felt a pull. (Not a gravity pull because I've felt apples falling on my head before.)
My heart beat accerlates. (Due to excitement, not from the force of the pull.)
"Uh oh, I think I've caught something", I mumbled as I reeled in.(It's not sea-weeds because the pull is pulsating)

It's a small fish about 15cm long, still moving.
I was surprised such a small fish would bite on a bait 1/4 of its size.
I quickly had a picture taken with my catch, before releasing it back to the lake.

Yay, a successful first attempt at fishing!
I think I'm hooked for a 2nd attempt some time in the future.

April's Fool

It's April Fool's Day, but Yangster has no tricks up his sleeves.
But Yangster does have some jokes up his sleeves. Haha.

1. If you are lost, then you are scalar.(not a vector because you are missing directions. Hahaha)

2. A Complex Math Story: I saw an interesting advertisement on the TTC subway. It was an informational Ad. on psychosis, listing different symptoms of pyschosis and how to get help. (Read about Psychosis: http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=303&PrintPage=1)
One of the lines caught my attention: "Are you having difficulties distinguishing between what is real, and what is imaginary?"

I stared at that line and thought for a while...
It is easier to tell that 3 is real and 3i is imaginary.
I also have no problem figuring out that e^(iPi) is real and e^(iPi/2) is imaginary.
But what about i^i?
Is it real or imaginary?

If you are unable to distinguishing between which is real, and which is imaginary, then you may be suffering from psychosis and require immediate medical attention!

Eventful St. Patrick's Day

Today's schedule went like this:
Morning: St. Patrick's Day Parade
Afternoon: Nap
Evening: Playing along with CBC's IQ Show, "Test The Nations"

St. Patrick's Day parade was pretty interesting.
It was a Canadian Forces Massed Band, meaning the bandsmen were from all different units.(Not that the band is very heavy. )
There were 7 ranks and I was in the middle, right behind the Bugle Major.
It took quite a while to get used to the new CF Trombone Drill.(ie holding the trombone with both hands at Attention)
As usual, the band was ready at 11am and hurried up and waited on and off the bus until 12:30pm to start the parade...

There were alot of crowds gathered along Bloor and Yonge St, cheering and celebrating St. Patrick's Day!
The band was near the tail of the parade, just in front of St. Patrick.
That's good because all the horses' err... core-dumps were taken care of before we reached them.
(Unlike the CNE where it was a minefield[think expert Minesweeper!])

The day was cool and a bit too windy.
It was hard to follow the Bugle Major when marching with a poor aerodynamic profile(due to the excess height of the bearskin cap).
Lots of compensators were used in the feedback loop to track the Bugle Major in front.(Minimum off-shoot and settle-time)

The parade went to a halt near College and Yonge, where a detour was later taken to College and Bay.
After the parade, I heard there was a bomb threat at College and Yonge!
No wonder there was a huge police presence!

The parade ended at City Hall and the band was prompted dismissed.
There was supposed to be a reception for all participants of the parade.
No one knew where it was(nor does anyone have an Antenna), so we just returned back to the Armoury.

Went home. Slept. Woke up right on time for dinner!

Watched CBC's Test The Nations on TV.

Test The Nations is an IQ test show that pits people from different occupations from all over Canada to see which group has the highest IQ.
The groups are: Celebrities, Tatoo Artists, Radio DJs, Millionaires, Surgeons, Fitness Instructors, and Mayors.
Viewers could also take part in the IQ test by using a score sheet or taking the test online.

Some of the questions are biased. For example, one of the Language Comparision questions asked:
Which of the following is similar to:
Dermatologist:Skin

I don't remember all the choices but the correct answer was Hematologist:Blood.
I think this question is a freebie for all the surgeons, and the results agreed with the surgeons ranking 1st after the language questions.
In general, IQ tests can't measure IQ accurately because of the language barrier.
Also, some of the questions were more based on knowledge than IQ.
(The language section of the IQ test seems to resemble the verbal section of the GRE!!!)
It was interesting to note that our Toronto's Mayor, David Miller was one of the participants too!
He was at the top in the Mayors group during the first half of the test.
Is he participating to show off his IQ so we will re-elect him? Hmm...

The end results were not surprising.
The surgeons group had the highest IQ, but the person with the highest IQ was a Millionaire at 137pts.
The order of highest to lowest IQ is as follows(if I recall correctly):
Surgeons>Millionaires>Fitness Instructors>Mayors>Radio DJs>Tatoo Artists>Celebrities
You may check detailed results here: http://www.cbc.ca/testthenation/results/
I wonder what happens if we have Federal Politicians taking the IQ test. Hahaha

Locker

Mouse Trap?

Yangster
